Are You My Mummy? & Flop Starz

    Are You My Mummy?

A hilarious and adventurous episode. I will always remember this as the episode Disney Channel Asia usually airs for the Spot the Diff episode when I was a kid.

    Flop Starz

This is pretty much an iconic episode. It's the episode to officially launch the series, Gitchee Gitchee Goo is still one of the series' best songs (and very catchy) and it has some of the funniest moments. I never got what the "diva" moment is when I was a kid but now, I think it's hilarious!

    Mummies and reality music competitions

Both premises for "Flop Starz" and "Are You My Mummy" were both intriguing and nostalgic. Was interested if also worried with what "Flop Starz" would do with the concept of reality music competitions, which does sound like a dream before competing but it does become less so when you realise what you're letting yourselves in for (having heard so many horror stories and how contestants are exploited). Despite loving music, "Are You My Mummy" was actually the more appealing premise and Eygyptology and mummies are fascinating if sometimes gruesome.

"Flop Starz" and "Are You My Mummy" both did great with their respective stories. Neither were quite perfect or among the best episodes of one of the better Disney shows in the past 20 years or so (one of the few shows on the Disney Channel now worth watching), but all the great things that were there in all the previous 'Phineas and Ferb' episodes, which were a great many, are here too in particularly "Are You My Mummy". Which is the slightly better of the two.

Neither are flawless, with the pacing being a bit too manic at times.

Otherwise, both of them are great. The animation is vibrant and beautifully detailed as is typical for 'Phineas and Ferb'. It is especially good in "Are You My Mummy". The music is dynamic, and the theme song is one of the catchiest of any animated show in recent years. Very infectious melody and the lyrics are quotable. The songs featured in the episodes are worthy of 'Phineas and Ferb', a show that had a great track record with its original songs. "Gitchee, Gitchee, Goo" is a fun song and lives up to its one hit wonder status it has in the episode, but there is a marginal preference for the clever and amusing "My Undead Mummy and Me", one of the biggest pleasures of "Are You My Mummy".

Writing is witty and is accessible for children and adults alike, nothing is simplistic here while still being easy to understand. There are plenty of gags here and neither of them miss. As said, the pacing is a bit manic, especially in "Flop Starz", but they are certainly not dull by any stretch. The formula hasn't become repetitive yet, due to both the settings being made the most part and having more than enough to set them apart. Loved the Perry and Doofenschmirtz subplots in both episodes, especially in "Are You My Mummy" (though Perry was very lucky with managing to defeat Doofenschmirtz the way he did without being seen by the other characters) which was wonderfully insane.

Chemistry between the characters is still great and all the characters shine in their own way. Candace does amuse in "Flop Starz" and Perry will never cease to be my personal favourite of the characters, underneath that adorable exterior he has a an amusingly tough as nails personality that reminds one fondly of action/spy thriller films from the past (all without saying a word). The voice acting is good.

Summing up, the show has not lost its great touch still. 9/10

    • Trivia
Among Candace's costumes for her audition are several of the Village People characters.
    • Goofs
When the ball from on top of the gumball machine containing all of the gumballs falls off and rolls down the hallway, none of them fall out. In reality, gumballs should've come spilling out because there has to be a large hole in the machine for people to buy gumballs and collect them from.

Candace: [seeing so many people auditioning] I can't do this.

Stacy: Oh yes you can. You're not a quitter, you're a fighter.

      Candace: I am?

Stacy: Sure you are. You're a lean, mean singing machine.

      [Candace punches her handbag]

Stacy: That's it! Yeah, now you're looking like a winner.

[Candace looks aggressive and breathes heavily; Jeremy walks up]

      Jeremy: Hey, Candace.

Candace: [fixing herself] And that is what a gorilla looks like when you try to take away its food.
