Rajat Kapoor, Cyrus Sahukar, Tara Sharma, Ranvir Shorey, Shruti Seth, Kalki Koechlin, Mansi Multani, and Sagar Deshmukh in Kadakh (2019)

Review by madhukar30

Kadakh

7/10

A Lovely Roller Coaster Ride !!

Though Kadakh shares many elements, and is loosely based on Alfred Hitchcock's Rope, the movie is beautifully adapted to the Indian middle class scene quite spectacularly. Friendships, relationships, loyalty, human character, aggression, moods, social decorum, everything is inspected and tested in this riveting character study that introspect's an atmosphere of a thriller but still makes you want to wait and know what is going to happen. Full credit to writer-director Rajat Kapoor, for keeping up the momentum in this brilliant and comical satire.

Cinematography is good, studio lighting is uniformly maintained. Rajat Kapur's splendid and deceptively-simple screenplay deserves full marks, though his direction looks primarily like a stage play but who is complaining, if the content is so good. Production design, music, costumes and makeup deserves a small pat and an understandable sympathy considering the budget. Ranvir Shorey spectacularly leads a full strength brigade of supporting actors, who perform to their best of their abilities honestly. Editing is crisp and neat with a runtime of 95 minutes.

Overall, This is a macabre satire that should be enjoyed at face-value with the option of ruminating on the deeper things, like a metaphor for the dead body as problems in life. A wonderful movie that will light up a typical Saturday evening or a lazy Sunday afternoon. And if you are interested, "Kadakh" means "centerpiece." 7 stars out of 10 for this brilliantly adapted dark comedy.
