The Invitation (2022)

Review by A_kind_of_Nick

The Invitation

3/10

A boring watching experience with an unlikable protagonist

I'm always very disappointed when a film with great potential turns out to be a bad-written story with a bunch of clichés.

Basically, we can summarize things like this: Evie Alexander is the "heroine" of the story because she's a strong, black woman. She doesn't really have any redeeming qualities: she's stuck in a job she doesn't like, she makes pottery without really seeming to have any talent in it, she seems to be constantly late, she jumps on the first attractive rich man that she sees and agrees to marry him in less than 48 hours... We're supposed to like her, but I just couldn't. She's the type of heroine who "simply knows better", drenched in self-righteousness. And of course, she can triumph over 4 vampires and a bunch of other antagonists thanks to her gumption. -_-

I appreciate what they tried to do with the whole Bram Stocker's Dracula thing, but it was a miss for me. The lore is flimsy and unstable at best, the characters don't act like actual human beings, the story is uninteresting... Frankly, I regret watching this movie.
