Greg Davies in The Cleaner (2021)

Review by blankyblank

The Cleaner

6/10

I thought I was getting something new but nope

A comedy about a crime scene cleaner - sign me up What are the ups and downs of this unusual profession?

First episode went about as I expected - interesting case in the background, interesting character in the foreground, ended in a sort of meaningful way. I did laugh here and there, even if they went a bit overboard at times. But hey, nobody's perfect

It's a shame the rest of the show didn't follow this recipe. Episodes aren't centered around crimes anymore, nor is it about a guy who cleans blood off your floor. Each episode introduces a new niche nut job - neurotic writer, disabled vegan with relationship problems, a classic rich old lady who values chairs more than people and TikTok personified. Crime scene cleaner is here to remind everyone constantly that he's a CRIME scene cleaner, not a regular cleaner and it gets old very quickly. The rest of the show he's in some quarrel with before mentioned nutjobs because of their very different lifestyles. So nothing to do with crime, investigation or cleaning. Episode three is all about meat consumption actually, we never get to the crime scene

It's not wrong to showcase some issues in society or represent some characteristic groups of people and make bland jokes everyone sees from a mile away. But you could achieve that with practically any plot, the main character could've been a police officer, postman, babysitter the outcome would be the same. Why do writers choose an interesting and unusual setting and then omit that originality in place of predictable jokes that are in no way connected to the situation? Why not focus on crime and death and cleaning instead of same old young vs old generational drift? Why even attract the viewers with a promise of unusual stories only to give them everything but that?

6/10 because I love crime stories, it was a bit funny at times and I liked the first episode. Everything else -just another sitcom Not to mention that it's a replica of an older German show...even the intro is the same... maybe 5/10 for stealing.
