Oil painting 101. When Br. Tovas is taking the painting to safety. The canvas is held on the backboard with a pin in each corner. Actually a canvas has to be tightly stretched and secured before primer or paint touches it, otherwise you get weird sags and wrinkles. The painting is tightly rolled up just minutes after being finished. Oil paints are easily smeared for at least 18 hours after painting.

Goofs
James told Brother Tovas to bury the painting in the forest, apparently so that his art could be undisturbed by human hands, leaving him forever alone with his Lady Love. But when Darken Rahl eventually sets fire to the painting, the entire depicted landscape goes up in flames. Drastic outside influence has a similarly adverse effect. Therefore, burying it would have brought on a catastrophic event as well.
