All's Fair In Love And War

The unnamed actress portraying the lead in this short film has an unnamed actor who's a brother in the Confederate army. The unnamed actor who portrays her lover joins the Union army. We see a short battle sequence, and then the lover, wounded, seeks refuge at her home. When Confederate soldiers burst in and discover him, she picks up a rifle and proposes to hold them for half an hour while he escapes.

Even by the standards of 1909, this story is old hat and the acting is poor. Nonetheless, there is some reasonably advanced editing, as shots of the man fleeing back to the Union lines are intercut with the shots of the girl holding a rifle on the soldiers. None of them seem particularly concerned about any of it, until the half-hour is up, and she makes an impassioned, breast-pounding speech.... none of which is available to the audience. This is, after all, a silent movie, and such trifles as what, exactly, people say is not important.

Over all it's not too good, but the editing is nice.
