People who want to kill themselves go to shrinks to try to help them
This Story reminds me of Romance Fraud, Marty was groomed by Ike. And finding out Marty is so rich, was a massive bonus.
What happens when people join cults is this not the same thing.
So people YES it does happen, Marty is lonely so he is easy to groom, each time Ike makes the bonds stronger. In the end Marty has zero non material in his world other then Ike. As Marty said "we are family" so of course even if its crazy he will do anything to keep Ike. Its like a druggie needing his fix, and that fix is Ike.
