Joaquin Phoenix and Armen Nahapetian in Beau Is Afraid (2023)

Review by jacewhite-237-481498

Beau Is Afraid

2/10

Better Than Skinamarink

What an incredible letdown after Midsomar and Hereditary.

The presence of Joaquin. Phoenix as the lead made me think this would be something really special. In the end, his acting was fine -- it had to be hard to become this character -- but the character was so boring that my concentration was more centered on wondering how the actor shaved that little scar above his lip than why the character was the way he was.

The acting was, across the board, fine. Richard Kind and Parker Posey stood out. It's great to see the former indy queen continue to dominate screen time.

But there's no saving the script. It seemed like one of those "Okay, what if we did this?" processes. What was the point, really, and ... was this really a good way to spend $35 million?

A24 seems to be coasting on its laurels, at this point.
