Brie Larson in Lessons in Chemistry (2023)

Review by hosenoggin

Lessons in Chemistry

8/10

Good thing I like big bang theory

I love brie Larson, but this performance and character is not only derivative but is borrowed. She portrays a female version of Sheldon Cooper. Right down to one of her parents being a church pastor.. Right down to the robotic, mono-tonous speech delivery. Right down to her being a brilliant chemist and a financial grant recipient at a clinical experiment and thesis teaching school... in California. Right down to her being inept in the ways of social and psychological human behaviors and/or interactions. Right down to the title of the series. Why didn't they just call it the "big bang chemistry theory?" I still do like the show because of its entertaining 50s backdrop and social messages. The cast is very good, except Rain Wilson was too stiff.

I know that some will disagree about the derivative from Sheldon, but I'm also here to say that I did notice the nuances that Brie added to make it her own. I also feel that the story could have been told in four episodes, maybe five, instead of eight.

Cheers!
