I love dinosaurs! What boy does not? I always loved dinosaurs and watching "The Transformers" made me a fan of the Dinobots. The success of "Jurassic Park" inspired this documentary from The Learning Channel. I love that awesome opening theme music; it was very upbeat and exciting! It was also nice to have different paleontologists give their knowledge and opinions regarding dinosaurs and other creatures of the ancient past. My favorite episodes are 'Flying Dinos' and "The Legendary T-Rex.' The narration by Ben Gazzara made this program unforgettable with that deep mellow voice. The 1990's had very good documentaries on cable TV. Then later up until this decade, TLC and the Discovery Channel got boring with "reality TV" documentaries. What happened TLC? Other good and forgotten documentaries were "Amazing Space," "Pirates," and "The Human Animal." I wonder when the Discovery Channel will put these on DVD.
Paleoworld was, and is, one of the most highly regarded paleontology series of all time. This was one of the very first looks into the work that goes into paleontology. The various finds and topics of the day. And it's pretty wide in scope. While dinosaurs are a huge focus of the series, other types of fauna get a good amount of focus. These include two episodes dedicated to mammal-like reptiles, a number of episodes focused on the last Ice Age, the various fauna that lived alongside the dinosaurs like pterosaurs and marine reptiles, and even more obscure subjects like earlier mammal species or an island dominated by prehistoric rodents.
It's not without its flaws, though. Some of the episodes, mostly towards the tail end of the series, could get a bit silly at times. And of course, science does march on. Some of the theories presented (such as the possibility that T. Rex was an obligate scavenger) have mostly been debunked or are outdated.
That's not saying they ruin the show. Paleontology is a rapidly changing science and sometimes it's important to contextualize what was considered mainstream. In that regard, I think it holds up well. Anyone with an interest in paleontology should give this show a try.
