The Law and Mr. Tarleton

While in town, Policeman Amos Potts (western character actor Andy Devine) gives Grandpa a ticket for tying his mule up on the sidewalk. Amos and Grandpa haven't gotten along since their younger days when they argued who the loser would be for a rough girl after them. When Grandpa argues the point Amos brings him to the judge, a role the policeman also serves among many others. A court date is set and Lavinia is to serve on the jury. Cletus studies to be his lawyer and Lavinia has Gloria to charm him in hopes it will dismiss the court date that interferes with her flower show. The Tarletons plot their own strategy.

Being set in town is a refreshing change of scenery from either the houseboat or Brent mansion. More refreshing is Andy Devine's character with a comedic touches that hint of W.C. Fields. A goof I've noticed: Every time the Brent mansion is shown there is a sign that reads "The Bowers". (I'll add that to the "goof" section.)
