Ignore the Boog Fans.. It's good
First off, ignore the book fans. Just like every other movie or TV series that was adapted from a book or series of books the fans of said books will typically drive down the review score into the toilet because it didn't live up to THEIR expectations. Forget these people.
That being said, based on the first episode of this new series, this is a very good show so far. I think the settings in San Francisco and New Orleans are beautifully shot. The setup of the narrative and lore of this world are handled very well in the sense they left the audience wanting to learn more about this world, the magic and seemingly underground society of witches and who knows what else.
Alexandra Daddario also does an excellent job in the lead role of Rowan. Apart from being drop dead gorgeous, she already shows in the first episode a good range of acting chops including a very convincing emotional scene.
I for one look forward to the rest of the first season and seeing what other roles Daddario works on based on her stellar performance in this.
