- [Leckie finds Runner and Gibson impassively watching the Marines clean up the aftermath of a Japanese banzai charge]
- PFC Wilbur 'Runner' Conley: They got Obie.
- PFC Ronnie Gibson: Macklin, too. I tell you, boys, next war, there's gonna be two men missin'... me and the M.P. they send after me.
- [he gets up and leaves; Leckie sits down next to Runner]
- PFC Robert Leckie: G Company took three alive.
- PFC Wilbur 'Runner' Conley: Well, good for them. It was a banzai suicide attack for the rest of these guys.
- PFC Robert Leckie: Apparently all the Japs on this end of the island are runnin' like hell to Rabaul. They left their sick and wounded at another camp near here. Another one hundred volunteered for this shit.
- PFC Wilbur 'Runner' Conley: A hundred against twelve hundred. They're either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid.
- PFC Robert Leckie: [grimly] Or just really fuckin' hate us.
- [Dr. Grant meets with Leckie the morning after Leckie suffers another attack of enuresis]
- Dr. Grant: Congratulations. You passed the test.
- PFC Robert Leckie: What test?
- Dr. Grant: You actually do suffer from enuresis.
- PFC Robert Leckie: You thought I was lying?
- Dr. Grant: Well, you know, a lot of guys'll say just about anything to get a couple of weeks of clean sheets, burgers, and the "pause that refreshes."
- PFC Robert Leckie: Fuck you. What about Captain Midnight? Is he fakin'?
- Dr. Grant: Who?
- PFC Robert Leckie: The guy that paces around all night, flying his plane.
- Dr. Grant: Ah, Stanfield, no. I'd say he's just exhausted. Worn out.
- PFC Robert Leckie: That's your medical opinion? Shit. I could do your job.
- Dr. Grant: I bet you could.
- PFC Robert Leckie: I get it. Some give-and-take over hamburgers? I get it. Okay, Doc, what's next? Wanna know how old I was when my mom took me off her tit? I mean, that's the type of shit you headshrinkers like, right? You wanna know why I'm in your loony bin.
- Dr. Grant: [patiently] Back home, after you've won the war for guys like me, I'd be happy to take a run at shrinkin' your head... for twenty bucks an hour. But here... all I do here is... assess. Who can return to his unit and who can't. So your head is safe with me. You know, most of the guys that come through here are simply... tired. My guess is you fall into that category.
- [Leckie thinks for a few moments]
- PFC Robert Leckie: They murdered sleep.
- [Grant nods for him to go on]
- PFC Robert Leckie: On Guadalcanal, the Japs would send a bomber in every night. It was mostly just to keep us awake. On Gloucester, it was the rain. On Pavuvu, it was just the fuckin' fact I was on Pavuvu. For the record, Doc, I was a freshman in high school when my mom stopped breastfeeding me. Do you see that as a problem?
