Winner of 1987 student Academy Award

Made with a budget of just $10,000 by Regent University graduate students Bird in a Cage won regionals and then the National Student Academy Award which put Regent's Film school on the map and stunned those expecting NY and LA to dominate the awards. Shot in sepia and lasting almost an hour, most of the budget was spent on film stock and processing. A classic hero's journey of a con man mistaken for the new pastor in a rural town when miraculous healings begin.

After shooting a short "Godfather" spoof, Zarro's first draft of Bird in a Cage was entitled The Stranger. As it developed it borrowed from both a Charlie Chaplin film, The Pilgrim, and Max Beerbohm's short story, The Happy Hypocrite.
