Beat the Devil

Dr. Lightman is invited to give a lecture for college students by his former professor and affair Helen Dezekis. He goes with Dr. Foster and interviews the student Martin Walker in front of the class in the auditorium. Soon he learns that Martin is a sociopath and present love affair of Helen. However, Dr. Foster does not see any sign in Martin to support Cal's findings and Helen does not believe him. Soon he finds that there is a female student missing and he says that Martin is the responsible. Meanwhile, Loker and Torres interview the renowned high school teacher Sam Hendricks since he says that he saw an UFO and Dean Warren wants to fire him. Loker and Torres sees a footage filmed by one of his students and seek out the truth to save his job.

"Beat the Devil" is a great episode of "Lie to Me" with two excellent segments. The lead one shows a duel between Cal Lightman and a sadistic sociopath with a good conclusion. The other segment shows Loker and Torres finding that the air force representative is lying, and, in the end, he lies and gives a useful explanation to save the teacher's job and not compromise the security of the USA. My vote is nine.

Title (Brazil): "Beat the Devil"

This is the 24th episode of the show and 24th episode where Cal sees something no one else sees, people don't believe him and Cal is proven correct at the end where people say "wow you were right again, you are so great, we couldn't see this coming but you could". Yawn.

People rate this episode so highly because let's face it, people LOVE seeing old recycled clichés on TV. You can recycle and use the same old clichés 100 times and people will fall in love with your show 100 times because that's what people want these days. They don't care for originality and they don't want to see anything new on TV.

This is why episodes like this get such high ratings and TV producers don't bother with originality anymore.
