    A female jogger is found floating in the Schuylkill River. Dr. Megan Hunt teams up with her partner, medical investigator and former cop Peter Dunlop, under the watchful eye of their boss, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kate Murphy, who is very aware of Megan's gifted but polarizing work style. Megan's colleagues, Dr. Ethan Gross and Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Curtis Brumfield, must find their own way to work alongside the new medical examiner. Megan's investigation takes her out in the field where she meets old-school cop Detective Bud Morris, who is exasperated by Megan's tenacity and bull-headedness. But his partner, Detective Samantha Baker, possesses a quiet respect for Megan's input, even if Morris doesn't. Meanwhile, as she's is trying to solve the female jogger's death, Megan has to solve a personal puzzle of her own -- what is the perfect present for her daughter's 12th birthday?

    Megan goes to a scene wherein a couple were killed. She meets Detectives Morris and Baker who believe it's a murder suicide because the man has the gun in his hand. But Megan proves them wrong when she reveals that the man is left handed but the gun is in the right hand. Megan learns the girl comes from a wealthy family. She assures them she'll find out what happened to their daughter. She learns that they dated years ago but her parents didn't approve of her dating someone who is white. She learns she was involved with another guy who is controlling and domineering. She discovers that the guy went to see the boyfriend at his place of business to let her go. The boyfriend denies killing them and his alibi is his latest girl who is afraid of him. Megan tries to find out if he's making her lie. Baker and Morris learn that they crossed paths with a racist who didn't approve of him dating a black girl. Ethan discovers something about the guy which could led to another suspect. Megan tries to reconnect with her daughter but is so pushy that her daughter tells her so.

    When a body that was buried starts sticking up, Megan goes and she learns the body was dismembered and not all of the parts are there. They somehow learn who the person is and go to this apartment and it's there that they find the rest of him, in the freezer. They learn she has a daughter who's married to an apathetic man who's irate that her father came to them for money. They also learn that his neighbors don't like him, too. They learn he went to a casino and won some money but it's not at his place so did the killer take it. And Lacey wants to go to Megan's place of work and record her and her co-workers. When she goes Megan establishes some ground rules but Lacey feels like she's tying her hands and not showing her anything meaty.

Megan begins to suspect the victim's doctor, but as soon as she starts ruffling feathers, the hospital stonewalls.

Also, Kate takes on a consulting role in a pro bono case with Megan's ex-husband, Todd.
