Unoloukik

10/10

Dazzling, astounding, chilling, other-worldly, and profound

Dazzling, astounding, chilling, other-worldly, and profound. These would be the most zeitgeisty word that apparel Chorki's Unoloukik. Talking about a Bangladeshi anthology series, not only does It breaks the barrier between real and surreal but also brings back a kind of genre that was on the verge of extinction amid unexciting contents having the same story told, again and again, growing like slow poisoning mushrooms which would eventually make us forget what we had in our 90s.

Many years ago(although not many years ago), before the age of social media, before the genesis of self-taught critic culture when the middle-class maintained the social and pop-culture of this country, it was the era of the 90s. It was the time of color television, It was the time of Bangladesh television and it was the time when our artists created some timeless classics. It still makes me wonder about a supernatural drama consisting of 5-6 anthology stories of that time written and directed by the great Humayun Ahmed. My inner self always cherished that someday someone would make some genre-bending tale like this. Finally, after 20 years, my long-awaited dream came true. Unoloukik was it.

So what is so astounding about Unoloukik?? Well, everything. In one story I see a confused and dilemmatic man with borderline personality disorder driving a car while slowly removing his hands from the steering wheel, makes me confused is it a Bangladeshi OTT content or is it some scene from any classic European psychological drama?? In another story two persons having a psychedelic conversation sitting inside a sophisticatedly designed room that questions the very nature of reality and creates many allegories. Or sometimes the story revolves around only one person telling some wild tales that happened in real but stranger than fiction without any logical explanation. Although these details are merely enough to praise the audiovisual mastery of Unoloukik. You have to watch this 5 episode anthology masterpiece to find the full beauty.

In this Cancel Culture generation where the perpetual fighting to win arguments over positive-negative bias is consuming the social media, Unoloulik is something not typical, which does not deal with the mass opinion but the thought process of the viewers which differentiates the intelligent few from the mass mediocre.
