Sharkey reviews the recruits with a barrage of insults. He's concerned how sloppy they have become and decides to ride them even harder. For his sloppy bunk, Kowalski (Tom Ruben) is restricted to the barracks for five days by Sharkey, who also adds some ethnic barbs. Kowalski sleepwalks into Sharkey's office that night repeating the insults. When Lt. Whipple learns of Kowalski's condition, he orders for him to be discharged. Sharkey talks about Kowalski's somnambulism to the base psychiatrist Lt. Cmdr. Crowley (Dick Van Patten) who feels the source is Sharkey's ethnic insults, having him choose another personality. He further feels it can be corrected by Sharkey being nice to Kowalski. Sharkey struggles to control himself, however, with the risk of Kowalski being kicked out of the Navy.
