Christopher Papakaliatis and Klelia Andriolatou in Maestro (2022)

Review by wjqpj

Maestro

7/10

Season 2? Very different in every way.

Season 1 was exceptional. In my review I gave it 10/10. Beautiful, evocative, intelligent, slick and well written.

Season 2 is entirely different. It is still beautiful, intelligent, slick and well written (at least up to episode 3 of season 2) but the essential character is completely changed.

What I liked so much about season 1 has been replaced by the reverse. Charm, warm atmospherics, islands and a love affair has been replaced by urban, violent, angsty misery. Nothing I would watch. It feels like the makers have tried to turn it into a totally different proposition.

I guess from a creative perspective then the urge is to evolve and create, and hence the instinct to take a new season in a new direction, but where I loved the first season, this is the opposite.

It's kind of like music artists building a fan base on one genre of classical music but then expecting their audience to still love it when they evolve into heavy metal.

So to me, I liked season 1 because it was nice and brilliant. Season 2 may still be brilliant, but not nice in the same way.

Season 2 may well be more popular, I don't know, but for me it's just too different and I don't like the genre of season 2. I may try episode 4 but I doubt it.
