Clean and entertaining fantasy movie.
Zachary Levi has been a favorite of ours for a number of years, he is the real world Harold. He knows nothing about the real world so he immediately has to learn how it works and how people communicate.
Next the Moose and the Porcupine make their way through the door, each takes on a human form.
The movie is just made for entertainment, however there is a good message embedded - to never quit dreaming and never limit yourself. The good person that befriends them is Zooey Deschanel as Terry and her young son. The bad guy that creates problems is Jemaine Clement as Gary who desperately wants Terry but she wants no part of him.
My wife and I watched it at home, on DVD from our public library. Just pleasant, quirky entertainment after Saturday evening steak and wine dinner, with chocolate cake of course!
Just a little better because it was a book i remember from my childhood
The dude from Flight of the Concords plays Gary who was actually a perfect villain for a semi children's story and I do mean Semi. Some of the jokes in the film felt a little too grown up. I know children will get them but not sure if you should tell them.
A similar movie came out this summer called If, but i thought this movie's kind heart had a lot more value to it so i pick this over IF.
Had potential, lacked a clear vision
Bliss in a film
An entertaining and funny film that blends amusingly human and cartoon characters.
A tribute to imagination based on Harold, the character from a children tale created by Crockett Johnson. Stars Zachary Levi, (Shazam I and Il)who gives a likeable acting, the film brings to life from drawing to reality and becomes the boy Harold into an adult with complete fun and wishes to play and to carry out sympathetic messes. In the animated world, anything he draws with his crayon is brought to life . In fact, one day when Harold draws himself, he's transported to real word, out of book, and subsequently his friends: Moose and Porcupine. There's a lot of FX , though the movie makes use of CGI for several scenes, some shots where Zachari Levi appears to draw in mid air were made with Harold drawing on a sheet of glass placed between him and the camera.
The motion picture gets a nice cinematography by Gabriel Berastain, as well as an acceptable direction by Carlo Saldaña. This brazilian filmmaker has made successful CGI animated movies such Ice Age, Scrat: Spaced out, Ice Age the Meltdown, Ice Age 4, Ice Age the great Egg escape, No time for nuts, Río and Río 2, among others. Harold and the purple crayon rating: 6.5/10. Better than average. Worthwhile watching.

- TriviaAlthough the film makes extensive use of CGI effects for many of the scenes, some of the shots where Harold appears to draw in mid air were actually done with Harold (Zachary Levi) drawing on a sheet of glass placed between him and the camera.
- GoofsAfter Harold paints the house, while Terry is lecturing him about feeding Mel pies for breakfast, the house behind her is not purple.
- Quotes
Narrator: [his note to Harold] Dear Harold. One day you might wanna know why I made you. In the beginning, you were just a boy with a purple crayon and a blank page. I wanted to show folks that with a little imagination, you can make your life whatever you want it to be. I wanted you to inspire people to live their lives that way too. We only have so much time in this world, but we leave our mark in the lives we change, and I know you, Harold, will keep inspiring our world, one person at a time. Because life isn't something that just happens to you. It's something you create. The trick is in the imagining.
- Crazy creditsThere is a scene part way through the credits showing Gary meeting the Princess in his fantasy world.
