One of the series best episodes

One of the most fun things that a series can do after dozens of episodes is to let its writers get creative with a "meta" episode. Here, the interplay between the "fictionalized" version of a fictional character creates great character comedy while it comments on the whole idea of acting versus reality.

    best episode of the series

Somehow this episode allowed all the actors to deliver fantastic performances. There was a natural and grounded vibe to the entire episode. It seemed like they were more relaxed and having a little fun. Everyone was energetic and engaging. However, Laura Prepon stole the show. She was amazing as an actor who works method and studies Beckett.

Sometimes I find Stana's Beckett to be a little wooden or disengaged, but not in this episode. She seems so natural and fun here.

The murder story was well developed and interesting but it really took a back seat to the cast performances and the character development.

Castle tells Beckett that he didn't sleep with Natalie because it was "Too meta." However, because he breaks up with Gina in the next episode, we know that he was still in a relationship with Gina at this time, and that's why he wouldn't have slept with Natalie. This was aired out of sequence. "Poof You're Dead" was written to air ahead of it. From the writer's view, Castle had already broken up with Gina when Natalie tried to seduce him. (Wikipedia, List_of_Castle_episodes).

Actually, the issue with Castle is that Natalie is portraying a character from one of his books and modeled after Beckett. In effect he would be sleeping with his fictional creation (which for the writer is another dimension), and by extension his real life partner Beckett.

[Castle dislikes the actress playing Nikki Heat]

Richard Castle: Nikki Heat... is classy, she's complicated. She's a... thinking man's cop.

Kate Beckett: No, we can't judge a book by its cover.

Richard Castle: Yes, actually. Yes, I can, when it's my book.
