Entertaining Martial Arts film from the DPRK

Much like the Chinese, the Koreans are good at producing entertaining martial arts films. One of my favorite films from the DPRK is Order No. 27 (1986), which also featured Korean heroes flying across the air and kicking their enemies. Although "Pyonguang nalpharam" was made 20 years later, based on the visuals, it could be from the 70's. It is likewise a silly action romp, very fun to watch if you just disregard the politics of it all.

The story is set during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The Japanese are proud of their own national Judo school, but deep down in their hearts they know, that the Korean martial arts school Taek-kyon is really the best. So they decide to steal the holy writings of the Taek-kyon school, so that Judo school would be the best in the world. Only thing standing in their way is the dynamic duo of Taek and Kyon, the offspring of the school's two founders, who are ready to kick some ass.

There is romance, there is action, and there is a loud anti-imperialist message. The fight scenes are not quite the level of Order No. 27, since they include a lot of fast editing. Still, I enjoyed them quite a bit. The story is not amazing, but the tone of the whole thing is pleasant. Especially the fights near the end are stellar entertainment.
