Aileen Wu in Alien: Romulus (2024)

Review by flare2

Alien: Romulus

6/10

Familiar nolstalgia cashgrab

The movie on its own was fairly enjoyable to watch. The cinematography, the effects, the set pieces, the dialogue, everything was on point. If you don't count deepfake Ian Holm, though. Unfortunately all the human characters are bland and uninspired and the android(s) are the best characters of the movie.

That said I feel the movie does not deserve a good rating. This was basically a remix of all the other Alien movies with way too many misplaced references and callbacks. Why did we need an android that looks like Ian Holm but is not his orginal character? Because money and nostalgia.

Prometheus and Covenant were not good movies but at least they tried something new and tried to expand on the Alien lore. This movie did nothing new, nothing interesting. You will forget it as soon as you leave the theater.

If nothing else I hope this film will serve as a stepping stone for David Jonsson. His performance carried this whole thing.
