    Castlevania on the Gameboy

This game was one of the first games for the old Gameboy system from Nintendo. So, it is a short game (only four levels), in black and white (the first Gameboy had no color) and while not an excellent game by any means, still fun thanks to it being made by Konami. This series of games shows that they can adapt their games to any system. I remember renting this one as a kid and becoming flustered; however, I have managed to win the game as an adult. I am running out of Castlevania games though, sadly. At least the old school side scrolling ones.

The story...not sure. It has a hero with a whip going through a stage and killing monsters. He does battle Dracula at the end (the easiest battle I have ever had with the dark prince); though, not sure if this is Simon Belmont or possibly another Belmont. No sub weapon in this game as you can only do whip power ups here. You get one and your whip extends longer and is more powerful. Get another and you shoot fire. Unfortunately, they make it so you lose a power up every time you are hit. The stages are basic, a set kind of stage another stage sort of underground and then one where walls keep closing in on you! Finally, you have Dracula's stage which is a lot easier than that one where the floors move to kill you! Also, Dracula is pretty easy this time, though there really is not all that challenging of a boss battle in this one. Once you figure out Dracula's patterns he is a cinch.

So a nice little game, but it does not even hold up well when compared to the NES version due to its lack of stages. It is also disappointing there are not more familiar enemies to combat as Dracula is just about the only holdover from the NES version. It is challenging as a couple of areas were very annoying and those things that shot the balls were a pain to fight. If they could have added two or three more stages and did a bit more with it, it would have been a great Gameboy game. As is though, it is an okay one.
