Maika Monroe in Longlegs (2024)

Review by nebula0024

Longlegs

9/10

A Masterclass in Film Making, with Exceptions

First of all, this film is a masterclass in film making when it comes to direction and camera operation. I myself have worked in the film industry for decades and keenly understand the use of different lenses, lighting, and color grading to convey emotion and to instill a sense of unease in the audience.

This film does all of these things perfectly.

There was one scene where two characters were conversing, both framed perfectly centered. When one of the characters gets under the skin of the other, the camera angle changes to 3/4 angle, conveying that person's emotional vulnerability and unease in that moment, pushed against the far end of a couch; small and unprotected. Absolutely amazing. No fancy visual effects, no jump-scares. It told the audience everything they needed to know with no extra fluff.

The way this film frames its scenes and actors is intentional and unsettling. One could argue the writing fell short towards the end, but nothing could convince me those involved in this project didn't know exactly what they were doing when they shot this film.

If nothing else, I'd like this film to be a perfect example of how to put your audience on edge, and how to tilt reality in favor of the film makers. Well done.
