The show isn't built for this kind of episode

I'm a firm believer that heavy subject matter merits a higher level of care and consideration. The first two episodes of Elementary understood themselves to be cozy mysteries and nailed that tone very well. This episode on the other hands deals with abusive adult/child relationships and, as you might expect/fear, sensationalizes them. The thing is, it can be quite fun to have a detective series that almost feels cartoonish, but not if you're talking about things like this. In addition, compared to episodes I found Watson in this episode to be frustratingly passive, Holmes to rely more on luck than wit, and the detectives to feel like window dressing. The legal drama aspect was dull.

    Pretty wicked

The case starts in a usual way and goes along in a fairly routine manner. We also soon get the identity of the killer with a count-down challenge for the police. Not unsurprisingly, the police gets the killer and you get an underwhelming feeling about the episode. But the moment you think its over, it hits you like a bulldozer and you get a wicked twist. The ending feels like the making of a new arch-nemesis of Sherlock. Overall, it's a solid episode filled with intrigue and intensity.

      Sherlock Holmes: No jogging, sorry.

Dr. Joan Watson: I thought that we both agreed that a little exercise would be a good addition to your sobriety.

Sherlock Holmes: For future reference, when I say that "I agree with you", it means I'm not listening.

Dr. Joan Watson: Do you know what else is great? Jazzercise. Get you some leg warmers, headband, you'll look awesome.

Sherlock Holmes: I agree with you.
