Show executive producer Michael Schur is a fan of David Foster Wallace, American author of "Infinite Jest" (1996). This entire episode is essentially an homage to that book: The law firm representing Councilman Jamm is Gately, Wayne, Kittenplan, and Troeltsch, which are all names of students at the fictional Enfield Tennis Academy; the compatibility test Chris and Ann take is the Incandenza-Peculis Parenting Compatibility Quiz, named after two characters in the book who are friends; Ben is transferred to the CT Tavis Medical Building in the Fackleman Memorial Hospital, named after the headmaster of the Enfield Tennis Academy and the debt collector and the book.

During the meetings between Ron and Councilman Jeremy Jamm's lawyers about the lawsuit Jamm has filed against Ron for assault, Ron admits to hitting Jamm at Ben and Leslie's wedding/the park fund raising event in the prior episode "Ben and Leslie," but no one mentions the fact that Jamm was at the event drunk and disruptive and that he had thrown stink bombs at the event, which prompted the confrontation between Ron and Jamm to begin with. Or the fact that Ron had asked Jamm to leave multiple times before Jamm shoved Ron, setting off the assault. It's also conveniently forgotten that after both men were arrested by the Pawnee Police, the police ended up releasing Ron and holding Jamm on the grounds that Jamm started the fight and Ron was defending himself. All of these facts would've immediately negated the lawsuit.
