Snow in Midsummer (2023)

Review by namie-98193

Snow in Midsummer

7/10

Vague and censored

Watched in cinema, some of the dialogues and scenes are censored. A bit hard to understand if you don't know the history (unrecorded + passed down words of mouth) of the racial tension/massacre in Malaysia.

The film tells the story from ethnic chinese perspective, which is rare and I am surprised this is allowed here after decades of keeping this sort of pov away from mainstream media - to be fair, it's pretty censored still to not create tensions and opportunities at politicizing the movie, given Malaysia's delicate political situation that depends heavily on tribalism, fear, and divide as of current.

I was born way after the May 13th incident in 1969 and appreciate the work put into this movie in telling the history from the minority perspective. The movie did a great job painting the confusion, sorrow and carthasis without putting either side as the sole villain or victim. Some messages are symbolic and sorry to say, flew over my head, maybe due to the censorship. Love the incorporation of malay syair and chinese opera.

It's worth to check out if you have an open mind. Else, please avoid if you can only see things in black and white. It seems like a genuine movie made to tell history and remembrance without hidden agenda. Nice to see it from a rare perspective.
