Rick and Morty: The Anime (2024)

Review by katiejwyatt

Rick and Morty: The Anime

7/10

It's okay, R+M fans are toxic as usual

This anime is okay. It's really not that bad, if you know what to expect. Unfortunately it seems the other reviewers didn't.

I was afraid this was going to happen. What's happening here is die hard fans of R+M are mad that this isn't a carbon copy of the show they like. This is what happens when you give a show that doesn't need an anime adaption, an anime adaption. Most R+M fans, are not fans of anime. There is no fandom overlap here.

People are being left confused, and are unable to follow the plot. It's not because the story is confusing, its because these people don't understand longform serialized story telling. They expect episodic story telling, where all the problems are solved each episode. Again because they want original R+M and are completely unable to handle anything different. Its the same thing for the jokes which fall flat, because it doesn't translate well in anime.

It's made pretty clear from the get-go that this isn't OUR R+M. OUR R+M swore to NEVER utilize time travel as a plot device. The R+M anime is purposely the opposite of that. This follows the story of an alternate Rick who DOES pursue time travel. This is a neat idea, that R+M fans seem to mistake for bad writing.

Unfortunately, I'm worried that because of this the anime industry and western industries will be more hesitant to adapt western works into anime. All because R+M fans are the most toxic people on the planet.

Overall, its not bad if you know what you're getting into. Do not go into this expecting the R+M you know and love. It's a different story doing its own thing using familiar faces. Just relax and enjoy the ride.
