    Fantastic Reliving of Classic Characters

I enjoyed the conversations of Dr.Victor Frankenstein and Vanessa Ives. Especially the lines "Man does not live only in the empirical. We must seek the ephemeral, or why live?". The dialogue is beautiful and the scenes are beautifully shot. I did not particularly like Reeve Carney as Dorian Gray. But I enjoyed the introduction of Billie Piper as Brona Croft. This series is turning out to be brilliant. I am addicted

    strong individual scenes

It may take a while for the premise to truly gel, and for the storylines of the four (or five?) main characters to cohere into a unified whole but if they keep delivering scenes like this episode, I'll happily wait as long as it takes.

Obviously, the seance scene was a real winner, absolutely riveting, well acted and well directed, delivering some powerhouse backstory info.

But the quieter scene on the docks with Dr. Frank and his new um friend also worked beautifully. It's a good sign when a series can deliver strong material that doesn't require a lot of screaming and teeth gnashing.

    Penny Dreadful: Seance

The second episode of the series continues to deliver with character interactions, gruesome kills, hypersexual encounters and fantastical acting, I actually though Dorian Gray was okay, I continue to be impressed at how engaging and interesting the myths and legends work and how the writers will deal with that part of the story

    • Trivia
Madame Kali identifies a presence as "Amunet". Amunet (the hidden one) is a primordial goddess in ancient Egyptian religion. Thebes was the center of her worship through the last dynasty, the Ptolemaic Kingdom, in 30 BC. She is thought to have existed prior to the beginning of creation along with three other couples representing primeval concepts.
    • Goofs
At the seance table, Madame Kali asks the women to remove their gloves and the men their jewelry. We see the servants with bowls go around the table collecting gloves and rings, but immediately afterwards, in the overhead shot of those seated at the table joining hands, Mr. Lyle and Sir Malcolm both still have on their wedding rings.
