Better than I expected
Critics panned it, it left theaters after only a few weeks, and it's about a sensitive subject - triple whammy. I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch this film until I realized the whole premise was biting satire about racism. I'm sure it makes many people uncomfortable, but I thought it was an original take on an important topic. Justice Smith and David Alan Grier were great, as were the rest of the cast. The film has a quiet intensity that some will interpret as slow and boring, but I found it to be rather compelling. The concept that Black people have to placate white people in order to be safe is a very sad but accurate statement. It's presented in a semi-comical way, so that it's palatable. I like how Aren becomes comfortable with himself, and Lizzie's plot twist at the end is a clever touch. This film isn't an overt rom-com or feel-good film, but if it makes you think, it has accomplished something.
