Really
A remake of a 2008 film of the same name. Why can't they come up with anything original? Don't get me wrong - Hugh Jackman is a force and elevates everything he's in. Not so sure about Kate but she's usually an okay actress. Obviously since it hasn't been released to theaters yet, I haven't seen the movie. But it is irksome that all the talent and they make a remake .
An Uneven Love Story, But Watch It for Kate Hudson
Love stories are among one of the most common and most popular staples in the movie industry, and they can make for some of the best viewing when handled properly. But that handling is the key - if done well, it can yield moving and satisfying films. However, if mistreated, it can doom such releases significantly. And that, unfortunately, is what drags down the latest offering from writer-director Craig Brewer, an uneven, formulaic, manipulative and melodramatic fact-based romantic biopic about the lives of musical partners Mike Sardina (Hugh Jackman) and Claire Stingl (Kate Hudson). Based on director Greg Kohs's 2008 documentary of the same name, this narrative feature tells the story of the performing duo of Lightning and Thunder, a couple that made a name for themselves in their hometown of Milwaukee and the surrounding area as a tribute band specializing in the music of Neil Diamond and, to a lesser extent, Patsy Cline. Theirs is a story of second chances, each having suffered setbacks in their married lives the first time around, as well as personal challenges, such as Mike's battle with alcoholism and heart disease and Claire's bout with depression. But both of them fought back, finding recovery in their music and in love, helping them each get back on their feet and enabling them to assist one another when new challenges arise. From that description, it would seem that such a premise should provide the basis for a solid love story. But, as noted above, the picture's uneven handling and somewhat mawkish treatment undermine its potential for greatness. The lighthearted, storybook first half, for example, sets a tone that can't support the more serious second half, forcing it to subsequently rely on calculated shifts in the direction of the narrative to make it work. In addition, the kitsch factor that drives the Neil Diamond repertoire at the outset is skillfully presented, if a bit overdone, at times approaching the format of a concert movie with incidental scenes interspersed to move the picture forward. But, when the film takes a darker tone, it comes across as incongruent with what preceded it, making viewers wonder how the two halves of the same story could have been combined in the same picture. To its credit, the performances of the songs are a genuine homage to the musicians being honored in this film, and the portrayals of the two leads are quite commendable, particularly that of Golden Globe Award nominee Kate Hudson. But, overall, there's not enough here to make this one of those memorable Hollywood love stories that viewers will fondly recall for years to come, and that in itself truly is a song sung blue.
So good! So good! So good!
The events in Song Sung Blue really happened. I was there as a fan in the '90's and it was crazy. Crazy fun, crazy entertaining and, off-stage, crazy tragic at times. The real "Lightning and Thunder's" performances were uplifting - you left singing and dancing and in a great mood. The movie brought back that time and feeling.
Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson were mesmerizing. They skillfully captured the spirit of Mike Sardina/Lightning and the still feisty Claire Sardina/Thunder. I had no idea Kate Hudson was so musically talented. The supporting cast nailed it. The director, Craig Brewer, and production team told this complicated and bittersweet story with grit, laughter and energy. I laughed. I cried. I danced in my seat. I am still unapologetically cranking Neil Diamond songs days later and I plan to for a long time (& I'm not a "boomer" but I'm old enough not to care whether someone thinks Neil Diamond music is cool or not) (spoiler - it is!)
Like real life, Song Sung Blue was heartbreaking at times. It was also joyful and inspiring. This couple experienced really high highs and really low lows.
These were "regular people" like most of us. Well... no one is quite like Lightning/Mike or Thunder/Claire... and maybe it's partly because, unlike most of us, despite all the obstacles they faced, they went all-in after their dream. They brought a lot of people joy doing what they loved and if that's not a fulfilling and beautiful life, I don't know what is.
Give this movie a chance (& check out the documentary it's based on, 2008's "Song Sung Blue" - yes, these events really happened). It's hard to explain, you just have to experience it.

Unexpectedly great story
A man, Lightning, and a woman, Thunder, find love and a chance at their dreams in together creating a tribute "experience" to Neil Diamond. They are working class people--and I expect there to be a wink by the filmmakers, a bit of condescension, "isn't this goofy?" tone. There is NO SUCH THING. This is a fun and uplifting and sincere and dramatic and refreshing film. Both Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson have tremendous voices and stage presence galore. Everybody else is great, too. Writer/director Craig Brewer is to be congratulated for turning his vision into great cinema. Great? Great!!!
The Heartwarming Neil Tribute of The Season
From alcoholic baseball fans who won't stop singing "Sweet Caroline" even when you tell them to for just one inning to that old guy in your building who still plays and quietly weeps to his cherished vinyl of "The Jazz Singer," except for "Saving Silverman" and that part you generally skip in "The Last Waltz" this is the ultimate film for Neil Diamond fans. As Milwaukee Neil devotee Mike, Hugh Jackman trades his Logan lamb chops for that amazing Neil hairdo you usually only see on Mexican detention officers to sing Diamond's hits with a true showman's devotion; his maniacal, Wolvie-like intensity just makes one wish that proposed 'Klaus Kinski as Wayne Newton' biopic had gotten off the ground. And Kate Hudson with her usual 'entitled python about to devour a litter of kittens' charm just shines as his fellow devotee and wife Claire. They truly are Lightning and Thunder, and they got the way to move me. This is going to be the monster hit of the holidays, and they come to America (only to be shipped right back) for "Song Sung Blue."
