Of Hopepunk and Gurren Lagann References
Hopepunk is a sub-genre of fiction that says that in the face of a post 9/11 world of grey morals, consequentialist utilitarianism and compromised social actors, we say 'No, we won't sacrifice our morals...AND we can win!'
This episode of My Adventure with Superman utterly epitomises Hopepunk to its core. Seeing our goodest boy once again find strength in the purest of places. There's also a really sweet payoff to Lois' personal arc that fans will find quite satisfying.
All this only works in tandem to the previous episodes that grimly juxtaposes Braniac's immense cruelty. In a vacuum, I can probably foresee some viewing this as a tad sentimental. But I don't care, deep down...we all kinda needed this.
Oh and it certainly helps that we're finally getting to see what a full Kryptonian invasion in real time which is really awesome! The vision of a possessed Superman leading the forces of Brainiac is pretty cool, albeit brief.
In short, I liked it.
