This movie was like they were trying to be mid
The R rating must be purely language as they curse just to curse in the movie.
The realism is 0. These dudes are out supposedly because they like fishing and the ocean, and the guy's rod is upside down.
The get harassed by sharks at some point and you would have thought it was megladon from the sheer size of the fins.
This was clearly filmed in a lake or a bathtub for the most part as it doesn't even pass as being believable in any way.
And then it just keeps going, 2 hours of mediocrity just waiting for it to end.

True story with thrilling moments
Not Without Hope comes as a genuine surprise, delivering a solid mystery thriller that understands exactly what kind of story it wants to tell. From the start, the film does a good job of pulling you in and keeping you on edge, constantly making you wonder what comes next and how much worse the situation might become. The pacing is effective enough to keep the tension alive, and the overall structure allows the mystery and survival elements to unfold in a way that keeps the audience focused on every decision the characters make.
Zachary Levi gives a committed performance and carries much of the emotional weight of the film. While his casting choice is slightly distracting when compared to the real-life individual he portrays, his performance itself is strong and sincere. The rest of the cast also does what they need to do, supporting the story without overpowering it. Together, they help ground the film and keep it from drifting into over-the-top territory, which is crucial for a story based on real events.
The screenplay is one of the film's stronger elements. It is surprisingly well written for a survival thriller and does a good job adapting a true story without losing its sense of urgency or emotional core. The dialogue feels purposeful, and the story progression makes sense, even if there are moments that could have used tighter editing or slightly more momentum. Still, the writing keeps you invested and respects the seriousness of the real-life experience behind it.
Where the film truly excels is in its ocean survival sequences. The scenes at sea are aggressive, intense, and often uncomfortable in the best way possible. You genuinely feel the exhaustion, fear, and desperation of the characters as time drags on. The environment itself becomes an antagonist, and the open water creates a sense of isolation that never lets up.
The introduction of the sharks adds another layer of anxiety. Once they appear, the tension never fully disappears, leaving you constantly wondering if they are still lurking nearby. This lingering unease works extremely well and keeps the audience on edge long after those moments pass, making the survival aspect feel even more terrifying and unpredictable.
While the film is not perfect and does have some awkward moments and casting choices that raise questions, it remains a strong and engaging watch. Overall, Not Without Hope is a good film that benefits greatly from a theatrical experience. The scale, sound, and visuals of the big screen enhance the intensity and make the survival story feel even more immersive and impactful.
