The episode's title is a reference to the 1940s radio program and subsequent 1950s TV series "Queen for a Day," in which several women would compete to determine which one's sob story was the most pitiable. The "winner" (that is, the person with the worst luck in life) would receive a typical game show prize (such as a washing machine, dryer, sewing machine, etc.).

Goofs
When Shoshonna, Yoshi, and Abigail are eating in the restaurant, they commit a number of Japanese etiquette faux pas' concerning their chopsticks. Yoshi appears at one point to be using mismatched chopsticks, and they show several points at which their chopsticks are crossed. Both of these are considered rude and are associated with rituals involving the dead.They also leave their chopsticks standing straight up in their bowls, which is a bad omen. Food offerings are given to the dead in the form of a bowl of rice with a pair of chopsticks sticking straight up. While Abigail may not understand the etiquette, the other two most certainly would.
