There are some very obvious threads left over from the story arc of the last few episodes. And those threads, or should I say people, will be resolved.
The result feels a little like going down a list of errands. Crossing off tasks after you pick up the cleaning, buy groceries and get the dog neutered.
Very productive but banal.
There are a few really good dramatic scenes though. So while it feels a bit disjointed, the individual vignettes are worth the journey.
Without giving anything away I do have to say I wish there had been a bit more struggle and less speechifying. Though the initial 15 minutes or so were classic, and will go down in history as some of the most badass Who, the balance of the program is a bit weighty.
And the end was a bit goofy. Still very strange to me that they left it like that and never pulled that thread again. Though I suppose those particular actors have better things to do than Who.
I do have to say I was a bit let down by the Gallifreyan scenes. I expected a little more pomp and glitz. This is Gallifrey and we aren't in the Tom Baker era anymore even if most of the costumes the Time Lords are wearing are. Some more glamorous architecture matted into the shot would have been great. Because otherwise it's kind of silly going from these grand establishing shots of the domed city, to these claustrophobic little sheetrock rooms.
It honestly not a bad episode, it just suffers a little from how they traditionally do penultimate episode/final episode in this series.
The last two episodes almost always seem they would be better edited into one seamless product that is 20 minutes shorter.
I'll start with the positives, the visuals were utterly brilliant, the scenes of Gallifrey, the special effects, the costumes, a visual feast. Capaldi is literally moving up the Doctor's list for me week by week, he is unbelievable in the role, I truly believe that his Doctor would do anything for Clara. Capaldi and Coleman's scenes were once again exceptional. The scenes in the Classic TARDIS set looked brilliant, so retro, and overdue an appearance.
On the downside, Face the Raven and Heaven Sent literally left me speechless, this didn't quite live up to the standard of those. Moffat has used the cheating death theme once to often, Clara's 'living' cheapened the bravery and hard hitting scene of Face the Raven. How many times can he use the not really dead concept, it was tired a few seasons back, it's now desperate.
It was a very dialogue heavy episode, what was done was done brilliantly, I'm just left a little flat by Clara, she'd been given an awesome send off, and now it all feels divisive. Also a little lacking in terms of action.
7/10 it was good, I just hoped for a bit more.
I think the problem is Moffat's writing. Although everyone rightly loves the episode Blink from an earlier season, he's been allowed to get away with naval gazing writing and with Peter Capaldi's performance rather tiresome and extremely boring (embarrassing scenes with an electric guitar need an honourable mention as well). Jenna Coleman was entirely wasted in these two seasons as she appears to have no chemistry with Capaldi. At least Matt Smith knew it was all a bit of a nonsense. I sincerely hope that the introduction of Jodie Whittaker and a new writing team will be fresh air and a cool reinvention for a show that needs something new !!!
I'm sorry if you expected some more in depth review but i don't think it needs any.
My worst moment of this episode was when Clara said to the time lords "I said stay back!" and they got scared and took a step back.
This episode makes whole Capaldi era pointless.
I guess you can still look forward to the new season since I think Moffat wont be working on Doctor Who anymore but not sure.
But i think it wont get any better.
