My Oxford Year

A fitting addition to these 'woman finds herself in Europe' movies. Bad in good ways. Amazing how small a world it is that the same 4 people constantly run into each other. Predictable but in a comforting way. Dad bod alert. Not exactly an accurate portrayal of dying and disease. But still oddly warm and stock photo pretty.

Let's play Romcom cliché Bingo:

• Sofia Carson is some kind of poor but superpretty A-type underdog (as in all her movies). Check!

• Main character has one gay and one quirky bestie. Check!

• Main characters are (at least somewhat) enemies to lovers. Check!

• Getting stuck in the rain leads to a kiss
• The cringey karaoke song that's supposed to be "a bit wild but still fun and cute". Check!

• The tragical twist (won't spoil what). Check!

• The whimsical setting that is Oxford. Check!

• The dancing with other people in order to make the person you like jelly. Check!

• The grand romantic geture(s) with first editions of books etc. Check!

The list goes on and on and I find myself wondering whilst watching if even ONE single scene is original. The answer is a clear NOPE!

Did I still watch it until the very end, enjoying it and wondering if they'd get their happy end?

She ruins the film. She can't act. Poor Corey tried his best, but they have no chemistry at all. I really enjoyed the book and loved Corey in Charlotte. I had high hopes. Too bad.

It also comes across way more vapid on film than in the book, and I wish this had been produced by someone else. Look at One Day for inspiration.

New Yorker Anna De La Vega arrives in Oxford for a year of study prior to taking a job with Goldman Sachs. Anna's dedication is challenged by Jamie Davenport, her handsome lecturer.

I didn't quite know what to expect; it's not my usual type of film, but I enjoyed it. It dips its toes into two categories that aren't my usual bag: rom-com and melodrama. It's like a journey and discovery of love.

The pacing and tone are uneven; the second half of the film feels at odds with the first, but it does become a little more interesting. I didn't see that twist coming.

Sofia Carson was very good; I liked that she wasn't playing a Brit's idea of a stereotypical American. If anything, I'd have said she was an American with stereotypical Brits; it was obvious that there'd be a huge mansion. Possibly some shades of Love Story about it.

I thought Corey Mylchreest was excellent, adding a bit of depth. I've not seen much of him, but a talented guy.

I found myself more jealous of the wine cellar than of that house itself; that was impressive!

Uneven, maybe a little syrupy, but I enjoyed it.

Her acting ruined the movie...she was stiff the whole time, soo unnatural. He was so much better, but they doesnt look good together..they didn't leave the impression of a couple in love..the story tells us so and the story is good but the acting spoils it..his acting was much more natural..but best acting has his father..other is pritty much clasik.
