Not My Thing
I'm not a big documentary guy, I only watched this for Christopher Nolan and I don't think I got enough of him. The camera movements don't resemble his style, but the framing was great. Especially the opening and closing shots. Any interesting lighting came from the Quay brothers. This is probably my least favourite Nolan short and again, I'm not a documentary guy, but if there's something I love in them is emotions and that was lacking in this.
interesting documentary short
I'm a fan of Chris Nolan but not of the Quay brothers, in fact, I just met them through this short. What can i say? I don't like how they work but I like the way this short is filmed and shot. Nothing more, nothing less.
A Brief, Mesmerising Glimpse
Quay is a fascinating short documentary that serves as a quiet and contemplative side project in Christopher Nolan's filmography. The film is a personal tribute to identical twin animators Stephen and Timothy Quay, whose unique and surreal stop-motion work has long been a source of inspiration for Nolan.
The film is a far cry from Nolan's grand, large-scale blockbusters. It is a very short, intimate portrait that combines interview snippets with hypnotic close-ups of the Quays' studio. You see their tools, their puppets, and their creative space in a way that feels like a sacred, privileged tour. Nolan's signature visual style is present in the film, but it's used with a gentle, observational hand that is both respectful and reverent.
The film does not try to explain the Quays' work, but rather to show you the artists behind it. It's a very personal and a beautifully shot piece that is less about narrative and more about mood and artistic reverence. For fans of Nolan, it's a a great piece to see a different, more subdued side of his directing. For those unfamiliar with the Quay Brothers, it's a great introduction to their unique world.
Quay is a brief, elegant, and deeply respectful film that is perfect for anyone interested in the process of art and the quiet geniuses behind it. It's a testament to Nolan's appreciation of cinema in all its forms.
