You don't have to be Irish to like the madness
I don't do lengthy in depth reviews I keep things simple overall. An 8 for tv for me is a 7 for a movie (tv versus movie seem to be on a different scale)(tv 8 means good). This show is very funny, it's silly, it's slightly weird. If you like slightly odd shows and are feeling nostalgic for the 80's you may like this. Some of the dialog is hard to understand as an American. But it is just funny characters doing funny things. It also reflects real life in the 80s in Ireland. The first episode involves selling black market condoms, and they play it out like they are dealers in the hood a little bit. Turns out condoms were in fact illegal in Ireland from 80-85. Other shows of similar appeal-father ted, spaced, the young ones, man seeking woman, kids in the hall, trial and error, and married with children most aptly. If you liked any of those you may like this show.
Just fell in love with this...
I respectfully disagree with the 1 star review - yes you're meant to think Eamon is a moron and like all characters, the great ones are never the main/lead roles (See Ep 3 - Frank in the bed!). Having grown up in the 80's with Irish family members on both sides of the border, there are references and idiosyncrasies within the script that have kept me chuckling and the black-market condom scenes were brilliant. Comparing Bridget & Eamon to Seinfeld is pointless, as B&E isn't trying to be intelligent. Given the similarities I've seen between the characters and my own Irish family members I imagine a great proportion of the script is inspired by their own experiences. The costume, titles, cinematography help paint the 80's vibe - which I love. The show reminds a little of Father Ted.
A right fecking poke at-the-old-world comedy.
As a Yank that lived in Ireland for half a year in the the 70's and visited in the 80's and in 2010, I find "Bridget & Eamon" to be a right proper comedy. From gregarious to the subtle, humor abounds, minute to minute, in this old-world-Irish send-off. Rarely can so many clichés be acceptably jammed packed into 24 minutes with such great results. I highly recommend this 5 star comedy. It's well written and nicely performed.
The wife hates it
Came across this while searching for 'Irish Comedies' around St. Pat's day here in the states. First episode had me laughing out loud, and it's gotten funnier with each season (working my way through 3 now). Yes, it's silly and ridiculous, which is likely why my wife isn't fond of it, but it's a very funny 'silly and ridiculous' as opposed to just being 'silly and ridiculous.' Perhaps I'd compare it to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" to a somewhat lesser extreme. The wife isn't too fond of that one either.
Absolutely Hilarious
I also have to disagree with the one star review. Though if that person had started with the first episode instead of the second I think their thoughts might have been much different. Every series takes time to find their rhythm, and the level and quality between episodes will always vary. This series is absolutely brilliant, and is a wonderful mix of zaniness, hilarity and quirkiness. For us yanks it does take a bit to get accustomed to the Irish accents, and some of the societal references will be lost on those outside Ireland and the UK, but anyone willing to invest a little time and patience will be well rewarded. I couldn't recommend this series more highly.
