    Excellent episode

I may be letting my favoritism talk for me, but I love this episode and Gabby's character is adorable. I wish they bring her back again. The episode has an excellent dynamic, Gabby steals the episode with her personality, and the CMC are in character, no scene is wasted to introduce us more into the relation between the CMC and Gabby, even the songs show us more about her and what the CMC try to do. I hope they bring her back for another episode.

An excellent cmc episode and one of the best of the season

This is an excellent cmc episode with a good moral about being good at something is not as important as feeling good at doing something to help others. Gabby is an adorable character and is awesome to boot. She is kind, caring, sweet, upbeat, postivie and helpful to others. Some compliant about her being a Mary sue. But I would say if anything she is a jack of all trades since she wanted to get a cutie mark but was failing throughout the episode and a Mary sue is a character who is always good at everything and also getting what they want. In the end gabby still doesn't get what she wanted and had to face the harsh reality. She even lied to the cmc and was also too hyper and didn't know when to calm down. She was too sensitive at times and lied to try to please others. So in some way she was trying a bit too hard to please others which can be seen as a character flaw. The animation is colourful and cute, the cmcs are really good here and are quite mature, twlight being a dork is always fun and the song while not the best is still nice to listen to. One of the best episodes of the season hands down.

Has faults but not the too cutesy episode it could have been

The concept for "The Fault in Our Cutie Marks" could have gone either way in execution and had the danger of being too cute. Have said this quite a few times for other 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' episodes but some stories conceptually of the show have had the potential issue of being too cute and a few have been. Seeing that most episodes prove themselves to be a lot more intelligent and layered than sounded and that the Cutie Mark Crusaders increasingly are a lot more interesting than they seem on paper, that was given the benefit of the doubt.

Didn't care personally for "The Fault in Our Cutie Marks" on first watch. Felt that it could have done a lot more with its concept, was quite predictable, too talky and too safe, while also finding Gabby too one-dimensional. On recent re-watch, "The Fault in Our Cutie Marks" was one of the 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' episodes that fared quite a lot better this time. It's still not perfect and the faults found with it first time are mostly still there, but there was more to like about it this time.

Will start with what "The Fault in Our Cutie Marks" could have done better. While it is great to have a character with a lot of positive qualities, Gabby for my liking despite admiring her resourcefulness for instance (and she's cute) was rather too perfect a character. Characters are a lot more interesting and progress more when they have a flaw of some kind, as long as they learn from mistakes and don't have any negative qualities done to extremes.

Other Season 6, and 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic', episodes had more ambition and had more happening, "The Fault in Our Cutie Marks" is pleasantly and engagingly (enough) told and it is good that it doesn't try to do too much but is at times a little too slight and safe. It is a dialogue heavy episode and sometimes it did feel that there could have been some trimming to tighten the pace and move the momentum forward.

Luckily the actual dialogue itself is not bad at all. It is not as cheesy or as over-sentimental as one would fear reading the synopsis, it flows well and has a heart that is both light and warm. The story is charming enough and there are touching moments. The Cutie Mark Crusaders are all likeable characters with well defined personalities, their chemistry sparkles too, while they have always been better than expected characters their development has come on a good deal since their first episode.

Voice acting is uniformly spot on. The animation is vibrantly coloured, fluid and the background detail is far from simplistic. The music fits the action beautifully. The moral is a good one and handled sincerely.

In conclusion, not a great episode but a pleasant one. 7/10.

In addition to being a direct reference to the 2014 film (see elsewhere), the title also references the Shakespeare play "Julius Caesar", where Cassius says "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves".
    • Quotes

Twilight Sparkle: Gabby? You just missed her. She was in such a hurry, she didn't even come in. Just dropped this letter and zoomed away!

Scootaloo: [reading] "Dear Crusaders, I'll never forget you. You really are every bit as awesome as I'd heard. I'm heading home to tell all the griffons how you did the impossible by getting me my cutie mark. Toodles."

Twilight Sparkle: [realizing the predicament] Wait a second. Cutie mark? You actually got a griffon a cutie mark for the first time in recorded history? You know what this calls for? A full-scale research project!

Sweetie Belle: This makes no sense. Gabby didn't come in and show you her mark?

Twilight Sparkle: You have got to get Gabby back here right away! I have so many questions! Oh, I hope I have enough ink and parchment to document everything! Spike! Guess what just happened!

[she runs off to tell Spike the news, but the Crusaders have other worries]

Apple Bloom: Weird. Gabby didn't show Twilight her mark like she said she was gonna do? Somethin' in this here applesauce smells kinda fishy.

Scootaloo: We'd better find her and find out what's going on. Come on, Crusaders.
