Sword Art Online Abridged: Side splitting fun
SAO was very enjoyable stuff and though it's quality has dipped and I think they squandered the concept it's been fun so far. Bingeing everything SAO related I came across this and didn't realize it was a fan based parody.
13 episodes in length it's essentially a redubbed and remixed compacted version of the show with over the top backwards and in places dark humor. And I have to say for the most part it's absolutely hilarious.
Seeing the characters in scenes you're familiar with suddenly discussing questionable topics and screaming profanities at each other officially split my sides.
This is something that will appeal to everyone who appreciates a crude dark sense of humor regardless of their opinions of anime. In many ways it lovably mocks the whole genre as well as splashing you with well thought out social commentary.
It takes quite a bit to have me laughing out loud but Abridged managed it through a combination of silliness and jokes that had me both cringing and laughing at the same time.
However there is always a flipside, there are only 13 episodes and the parody only goes up to the first episode of SAO's season 2! Therefore sadly this hilarity is incomplete and that breaks my heart.
Regardless this is incredibly funny stuff and I firmly recommend it.
The Good:
Really funny stuff
Flawless dubbing and re-editing
The Bad:
Incomplete
Some parts get needlessly serious

Accidentally Genieus
I believe with my whole heart that these makers are just trying to poke fun the series, and tried to make a joke at every oppertunity they could. But somehow it surpasses normal expectations of an parody. This makes it a perfect case study.
But how did they manage it. they started to shuffle the caracters arround. And then they commited to these new caracters. All jokes remain in caracter and were often because of caracter. They even somehow managed to even let the main caracters to experience growth.
Next, they expended the theme of being in a computergame by making jokes about glithes, balancing, lag and other things.
And third, ofcourse just absolutely witty dialog and suppurp insults.

Beautiful
This parody is simply spectacular. Honestly, the only reason you should watch the original is to see how much better this is than it.
One of the best parodies that far surpasses the original.
If it isn't clear by the title, I hated the original Sword Art Online. While most of the hate is clearly mob mentality and part of a meme, the series itself was horrible. Terribly one-dimensional characters and a Gary Stu piled with plot armor as the main protagonist, worthless female characters that serve nothing but to fall in love with the main character for no reason, laughably pathetic and generic villains, writing that is equivalent to a fourteen year old's fan- fiction, and worst of all, fanservice that never seems to end and hinders whatever credibility I could possibly give to this mess of an anime.
Normally, when I heard there was a parody of this anime, I thought it was going to be nothing more than lazy writing with some of the lowest form of wit for the sake of comedy, but after finishing the whole series on the Aincrad arc, I just loved it. SWE ended up rewriting the story and gave the characters actual...character. The finale was perfect and even got a laugh out of me when one of the scenes criticized the resolution of the original...actually, most of the series got a laugh out of me between the way Kirito and Asuna interacted with each other and others alike. Kayaba became much more than a lame antagonist that doesn't even remember the very reason why trapped and killed thousands of players in a very unique and interesting way. The side characters were fun to watch, especially Klein, who has more relevance to Kirito and the plot than in the original. The story was well rewritten and actually made me care about some of the characters with voice acting that didn't make me want to shut my ears.
Overall, I commemorate everyone who worked on this project. All the hard work was clearly there in making an otherwise bland anime into something worth watching.

This show is great.
Everything about this show is done extremely well. The voice acting is great. The story is great. All the characters are well-written. It is consistently funny. I have no complaints for this show. I would highly recommend it. Do not watch the original version, because it is extremely poorly written. This version is a masterpiece and I love it.
