Michael Phelps: the worst is I was sitting in the ready room and I remember I know there were always two cameras in the upper right-hand corner right before we walk out and I'm sitting there and spitting water and like "Yeah, what is going on?" As I'm making a face, I'm like "Yup, that's on camera"
Self - Host: that's gonna be everywhere
Self - Host: [as the audience laughs] someone will pick it up tomorrow
Self - Host: [imitating Phelps' face before taking out a Life size cutout of Phelps] you were making the maddest face and oh my gosh, in fact, I mean I can't even do this interview, I'm so freaked out about this dude. Not only his gonna beat me swimming, his gonna murder me as well
Michael Phelps: [after Fallon imitates Phelps' backslap swimming technique] I've literally have done it since I was eleven years old
Self - Host: describe Rio for me, describe Brazil: you said nice things about them when you were leaving
Michael Phelps: yeah
Self - Host: how was your experience? This was your fifth Olympics?
Michael Phelps: every year there's "something" that everyone writes about and talks about before you get there. I mean I thought it was great, the people were awesome, they did the best they could, the people were so supportive of us, they were excited in the stands
Self - Host: like when you walk down the street, they had the Olympic Village, right?
Michael Phelps: uh huh
Self - Host: and you just walk around in your USA sweats?
Michael Phelps: yeah, I would eat at the dinning house once a day, that was my lunch
Self - Host: you mean all the different countries or just USA?
Michael Phelps: we have like... we always say we have a "designated section" that we sat in
Self - Host: [jokingly] you sat at the "cool" table?
Michael Phelps: yeah, we all picked the "cool" table to go to. So, the swimmers always eat together, it's kind of a madhouse in there
Self - Host: but then when you walk down the street, people are rooting for you because they know who you are even if you're wearing your hoodie
Self - Host: [gestures to the life-size cut out, jokingly, sarcastically] that's your secret disguise: that guy can't walk around at all but did you go out to eat? Did you just focus on the...?
Michael Phelps: [interrupts him] no, as soon as I got done swimming, I checked into the hotel with my family and left like two days later
Self - Host: yeah, that was it
Self - Host: [jokingly, referring to the scandal the other USA swimmers were involved in] because other people chose other things to do
Self - Host: [while the audience applauds, jokingly, referring to his teammates] they didn't CC you on the invite?
Michael Phelps: I didn't get the "memo"
Self - Host: you could've let them know where the bathrooms were
