I really love this show! It's refreshing and charming. I like all of three Alex's - especially older Alex! The dialogue is believable and the story is engaging. I found myself really rooting for all the Alex's and I'm excited to see how things turn out for him! Alex's daughter (both young girl and young woman) are terrific! Thanks for a delightful show! Keep it going!
I watched a lot of TV series in this genre, but this is just exceptional. Every time i watch one of the episodes i feel different but all good feelings as if this was made to fill people with only good feelings and the way that its plot has been created shows us clearly that it is a work of masters. It is an awesome TV series and you can watch it alone or with someone or with your family. At the end of each episode you will see things differently and you will learn to never take anything for granted!
This show is a breath of fresh air. It's funny, sweet, irreverent, and makes me PRAY that they don't mess it up and get it canceled. Please give it some more press, CBS! The child actor who plays Alex is a total gem. Of course Bobby Moynihan is hilarious and has a sweet, innocent quality. Then there is the legend, John Larroquette. This cast is unbelievable, and they can go the distance if they keep up this momentum.
A tangent first, if you will grant me the time...
Is anyone familiar with Trans-Syberian Orchestra's "Bethoven's Last Night?"
There is a song in there "This is Who You Are" of which some of the lyrics are:
Wandering inside this night Finding pieces of a life Never sure I'd ever know what it means
It's the strangers in your life That you'd never thought you'd meet It's the hand that picked you up When you're laying in the street
It's then hand that cut you down It's the dream that someone shared When you thought that all was lost It's the friend that wasn't there
You can run from all the memories But never get that far For in the end they'll find you For this is who you are Change one note Change one line Nothing's going to be the same Change one loss Change one cut Everything is rearranged
Every act Cruel of kind Lost inside our memory If you look There in time
You'll find it in, Find it in, Find it in, You'll find it in me
This show reminds me very much of those lyrics.
Everything that we experience - no matter how long ago it happened - is all still inside and influences how we see the world we see today.
In the case of this show, it makes for a very sweet heartwarming show. A show that I find very comforting.
I especially like that it doesn't fall into tropes - the brother is nice - not the bully from other shows, the step-father is GREAT, the blended family works together. The father and daughter get along great in the middle age segments, and I love John Larroquette's relationship with the older version of the daughter.
All in all, I really like this show and hope that it lasts a long time.

10TV guide
If this were just about a 14-year-old budding inventor who has to switch to a new school, it would be a good show about the awkward life of a teen. But by adding the scenes about two later periods in his life, raising his daughter after his divorce at 40 and reconnecting with a lost love after his retirement at 65, they have added poignancy that raises it to a level beyond mere comedy.
The only problem I have with it is that so far, the 40-year-old does not seem to have the same personality as the 14-year-old and the 65-year-old, and this seems to me to be the weakest part of the show. But we'll see.
