I absolutely loved this episode!! Excellent writing and cast!
This season has been so up and down.
The story lines that are most interesting are Jack's war story and Kevin finding info on his dad. Why is Randall doing what hes doing? Kate and Toby are boring boring boring. Tes situation came out of nowhere and is added to an already full plate of food. Then there making Deja situation a BIG THING again. (They could easily explore what Deja is going through at school or something.)
What im thinking is the writers must be pressured into getting everybody to have a story this season. so much is going on.
I wish they'd hurry up and close up Jack's history. Keep the kevin and his lady friend stuff goin. More more more of Jack and Rebecca and the young kids.
This episode was rushed and jam packed with too much stuff and a bit boring.
But ill watch because i love this show.

We continue the Vietnam investigation. Kevin is obsessed and Zoe is really only along for the ride. We see parallels between the Vietnam war and the visit to find out what happened between Dad and the mystery woman. Tess is dealing with conflicting feelings about her sexuality. It's a solid episode because nothing is simple. That's why television shows were so popular because they presented us with characters we would like to be but just can't be. We also get to see how Jack as a soldier does everything in his power to being Nicky home, but the guy is so full of PTSD that it's not going to happen.
I LOVE this series, but, I really disliked this episode. It was like a daytime soap opera episode-overly dramatic and made sure it got all the characters some screen time. It was shoddily written and pedestrian, as if the writers were trying to fit things in quickly and effortlessly. So disappointing in so many ways. I thought the usual award winning writers had been replaced by the B team. This Is Us can be so much better.

- TriviaJack's US Army unit patch is visible on is shoulder early in the episode. It's a shield with the Southern Cross constellation on it indicating Jack is in the 23rd Infantry Divison.
- GoofsRandall is running for City Council and it is suggested in this episode, (which takes place shortly after Thanksgiving), that the election is just a few weeks away. Indeed, an important plot point involves the results of a recent poll, which is supposedly the last one that will be conducted so close to the election. However, the primaries for City Council take place in May, and the actual election is on election day in November. It is unclear if Randall is running in a primary or the general election, but either way, the election is either 6 months or 11 and a half months away. The candidates would not be holding a debate so far in advance of such an election.
