"Will Rock" is one of those games where you just want to grab the biggest gun you can find and dive into battle without looking back. Released in 2003, it was clearly inspired by large-scale cult shooters like "Serious Sam", but it adds its own unique atmosphere. In this game, you're up against an army of mythical creatures - and even Zeus himself.
Story isn't exactly the priority in a game like this, but still: the main character is Will Rock, a student archaeologist who, by a twist of fate, ends up trapped in a world of ancient Greek myths. To save his girlfriend, he has to fight his way through hordes of enemies, taking down gods, monsters, and all sorts of mythological beasts along the way.
The deeper you go, the more wild and varied your arsenal becomes. You start with a simple pistol, but before long you're wielding machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, a crossbow that fires flaming bolts, a freeze gun, an acid cannon (which causes enemies to swell and explode), and even a kind of mini-nuke blaster. The weapon lineup is genuinely awesome. Experimenting with the arsenal is a joy in itself - finding the right weapon for each enemy type and then mowing down waves of foes with brutal efficiency.
"Will Rock" isn't a game where you stand still and aim carefully. Enemies come at you from every direction, and the only way to survive is to keep moving - dodging arrows, spears, claws, and anything else that the mythological nightmares throw at you. The enemy types are diverse: from skeletons charging at you with axes while yelling "Yee-haw!" to massive cyclopes that take serious firepower to bring down. The bosses are impressive, and the final fight with Zeus is a real test of survival. The levels are visually striking and varied - essentially arenas - and to move on, you need to clear out every single foe in the current one.
For its time, the game looked really solid. Temples, statues, mountain views, scenic waters - all of it creates the vibe of an ancient world come to life. The music was a perfect fit for the action, and the voice acting was great too. On top of that, there were three superpowers (bullet time, boosted damage, and invulnerability) that added another layer of tactical choice. Used wisely, they made for some epic gameplay moments.
Today, "Will Rock" may be mostly forgotten, but it was - and still is - a great chaotic blast. It wasn't a timeless classic, but it carved out a solid niche. It's a pure adrenaline shooter where thinking takes a backseat to shooting, dodging, and surviving. A great pick for fans of old-school action - with tons of enemies, over-the-top weapons, and unforgettable moments.
