Here's a short showing a cake walk. Although the term may be better remembered as slang for "something easily accomplished", it arose as a term for a type of mock-serious dancing practiced by Black slaves in the Pre-Civil War South, in which they danced in what they imagined was the manner of their manners. there are several conflicting explanations of how cake became involved, including an award of a cake for the best couple, as well as a mutation of some word from the language the slaves (or their ancestors) spoke in Africa. Because there's no compelling evidence to support any hypothesis, I'll leave it at that, and note that the ridiculous figures the dancers cut might have arisen through lack of cultural continuity between the polite, dances of the west in the 19th century, and the dances of the slaves (or, again, their ancestors) back in Africa.
