I thought the ending was a great plot twist. I really don't get all the negative reviews. It had me fooled. I never saw that coming.
Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the first movie so much that I have seen it 3 times. Actually I am a big fan of haunted houses-found footage-halloween movies like Hellhouse LLC etc. But this one...omfg. This one was a disaster...same story to the detail, characters were thin and you didn't feel any sympathy for them like in the prequel, acting was terrible, payed too much attention to the attractions and the actual plot start 80mins into the movie. Also the ending was terrible and the drone parts ridiculous. I didn't ever expect to say it for a movie of this kind but I wasted 105 minutes of my life.
Unlike a lot of horror fans, I liked the first The Houses October Built. I liked seeing the backwoods, indie haunts and I thought it was a creative idea to weave a plot into what was, basically, just a Haunted House Road Trip.
This one just seems like a way for the filmmakers to get paid to go on another Haunted House road trip, only with a much more flimsy and boring plot.
Unfortunately, the places they visit are even more boring than in the first film because of a very weak premise involving one of the main characters. The events look fun enough, but far from scary, even in person, much less on film.
I gave this movie 4 stars because I like seeing indie haunts from across the country. Also, in general, I like the premise of seeking the extreme, or seeking forbidden knowledge, then being rewarded with more than you bargained for.

Fast forward till only 30 minutes remains and then start watching the film.
Nothing significant happens during the other 70 minutes. Interviewing horror show groups, visiting their horror shows, travelling in the RV from one town to another searching for horror shows, and interviewing them. Felt like a documentary film.
So, if you really want to watch this, watch only the last 30 minutes of the film and you have the entire story covered.

I really liked the first one but this one is crap in comparison.
No scares, AT ALL, unless maybe you are 10, home alone with it storming outside and all the lights out, even then I doubt it.

This one is a PASS for sure.

- TriviaThe character Bobby wears a Stephen King Rules t-shirt just like the one worn by Sean Crenshaw in the classic The Monster Squad (1987)
- GoofsThey are supposedly driving around Minnesota, but at 35:58 a haunt actor refers to a place 'near here' that is at exit 99 off of I-5. Exit 99 off I-5 is just south of Olympia Washington - clear across the country. It reveals the clips featuring real haunt actors was collected from folks all over the country.
