Sometimes, obviously low budget independent films are often pretty bad, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Like a lot of these films, there were some very good performances and a few pretty bad ones. But it moved quickly, and always good to see Eric Robert camp it up. At $2.99, a bargain.
As a seeker for horror anthologies, this is at the bottom of the entries in the last few years. It really suffers from poor execution, unconvincing acting, and zero budget design/production. The directing and editing seem non-existent except for shoddy PP effects. For actors that have a at least a B track record of performance experience, I found it surprisingly weak in this area. Some of that may have been symptoms of other issues, direction/script/otherwise. Either way, I was struggling to see this one through. The whole thing was dubious at best, and it can't all be blamed on the budget or bad CGI. And yes, the CGI is bottom tier.
As a collector of horror anthology movies, I have emassed a large collection. I would not say this movie goes into the excellent section but it it will be on the good shelf. It does have a bit of a b movie feel but it isn't altogether cheese. Most of the segments work and there are some good twists in a few that will leave you smirking more then being terrified. I liked most of the effects, the acting ranges from solid to hanging on by a thread. But as bad as anthologies can be this one is worth a watch and if you aren't expecting an Exorcist level horror film and watch it for what it is with a bag of popcorn on a rainy night you'll be entertained.
The whole budget used for Eric Roberts for his 10 minute inclusion? So much more could have come out of the stories, had they not worried about having a main stream actor at his lowest than these terrible, below b(d actors) performances. 3 C actors would have been much less painful.
Let's start off with the obvious. This is a B movie. There is no sugar coating that. Once you know that, your ahead of the other reviewers. No, it's not going to be winning any awards (not that winning awards means a movie is any good, but...). No, the acting isn't first class, stellar performances. No, the script isn't William Shakespeare. No, there isn't even any nudity! PG-13 nudity, but ... sadly, none of the standard B-movie gratuitous nudity we've come to expect from this type of movie.
Having said all that, you're probably wondering why on earth I'd rate this a six, huh? Well... even with all of that, it's not a bad movie. There's nothing to hate. While the acting isn't stellar... it's not bad. While the script isn't Robert Frost... it's not trash. If you are looking for an entertaining movie that you can sit and watch for an hour and a half without any subtext, you could do a lot worse.
