Sean Penn buffed up nicely for this

Otherwise, not much to this long-hyped premiere. Yes, we met a few key characters and they've been set up as American heroes, yet flawed, if not fragile. My biggest challenge was with the predictability. Considering this episode's events, what's next seems clear.

Ignoring Science

Science says the Earth is running out of the Resources to continue using Missiles, Solid Rocket Boosters to get to Space.

Sir Arthur C. Clarke was asked when the Space Elevator would become a reality. He answered, "Probably about 50 years after everybody quits laughing."

At the Space Elevator 2nd International Conference held in Santa Fe in 2003, he had become more optimistic, updating his estimate to "10 years after everybody stops laughing ... and I think they have stopped laughing." - Sir Arthur C. Trivia
The launch explosion after the crew announces, "go at throttle up" is reminiscent of the space shuttle Challenger accident, which happened at the same time during its launch. The resulting cloud and falling debris also closely resembles what appeared immediately after the Challenger malfunction.
