I was looking for something to watch last night and came across The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family on JioCinema. With a name like that, I expected a comedy of sorts. It isn't.
TGIDF quite boldly (for India) takes on relevant issues that could occur in any family, okay Dysfunctional Family, but as one of the characters rightly observes, every family is dysfunctional once they're in the privacy of their own homes. To whatever extent.
We have a young teenage girl discovering that she is not 'straight', the consequences on her best friend's marriage plans, her family's shock and awe reaction and eventual acceptance. While this may not happen in every family, it certainly does in many and a big credit to the film makers for exploring this issue in more than just a half decent manner.
Everyone in the D Family has skeletons in their respective closets and this series maturely explores the various issues that are really nowhere near as uncommon as one might want to believe. Indeed truth is mostly stranger than fiction. This series does indeed touch upon a lot of ugly truths that prevail in yes even our so called normal Indian families.
Dont wish to add spoilers for those who havent yet watched, so let me sign off saying that TGIDF is certainly worth watching, holds the interest throughout. The only reason I rate it 7 rather than 8 or 9 is because of the excessive and fast forwardable Recaps at the beginning of each episode and the soap operatic melodramatic background music far too often. Kay Kay Menon is expectedly superb as the 'Khadoos' elder brother. He looks quite a bit like a handsome central Minister of State in the FinMin who also had a good innings at the BCCI no prizes for guessing who :-)))
